Eugene Higgins was the rich heir to a carpet-making business who was a bon viveur, sportsman and philanthropist. He was a bachelor and when he died in 1948, his estate went to establish the Higgins Trust which was, at that time, the eleventh largest of its kind in the USA. The funds from this trust endowed chairs at Columbia, Harvard, Princeton, and Yale universities.[1]
