Europäische Stammtafeln

Europäische Stammtafeln - German for European Family Trees - is a series of twenty-nine books which contain sets of genealogical tables of the most influential families of Medieval European history. It is a standard reference work for those researching medieval, imperial, royal and noble families of Europe.

A reference to this work is usually to the third series. A fourth series, identified as Neue Folge, is being written by Rev. Detlev Schwennicke who is the sole author who started at volume 17 and is currently being published Frankfurt am Main, by Verlag Vittorio Klostermann. Twenty-nine volumes are available. Detlev Schwennicke died on 24 December 2012.

History

The preceding 16 volumes of the third series of the Europäische Stammtafeln (edited by Detlev Schwennicke) was a derivative work which built on the contributions of:

• the first series edited by Wilhelm Karl, Prinz zu Isenburg (1903–1956). He published the first volume in 1935 and the second before the start of the Second World War. After the war plans and outlines were drawn up for further volumes but due to illness he did not complete them.
• the second series by Frank, Baron Freytag von Loringhoven (1910–1977) was a revision and continuation of Isenburg's work. The first volume was published in 1953 with a further three volumes followed before his death in 1977.
• a sixth volume — an edited edition of Loringhoven's first volume, was published 1978 as Schwennicke's first volume.

Between 1978 and 1995 Schwennicke edited another nine volumes up completing the 16 volume third series. A full citation to the third series is:

Symbols

The stammtafeln (family trees) show genealogical tables that heavily rely on symbols as a "shorthand" of vital events. While this is common in Europe, many outside of Europe can find this confusing at first. Each volume contains a "Legend and Advice for the Use of the Genealogical Tables." The number of genealogical symbols have grown over the series, but consistency has been maintained.

Two linked circles

Examples:

• An asterisk " * " is geboren (birth).
• Two linked circles is vermählt (married).
  - Note: Similar to two plain wedding rings slightly over lapping.
• Two linked circles in parentheses is Ehevertrag (marriage contract) and used when the marriage date is unknown, but the marriage occurred.

Dagger shape

• A circle " O " is verlobt (betrothed) and used when the marriage date or marriage contract date is unknown, but the marriage occurred.
• A dagger - often misidentified as a Christian cross - is gestorben (died).
• A box or rectangle - often misidentified as a coffin - is begraben (buried).
• A wave or tilde " ~ " is getauft (baptized).

Crossed swords

• Crossed swords with hilts down is gefallen (fell in battle).
• Crossed swords with hilts down in parentheses represents the German phrase "an den folgen einer Wunde gestorben (vermißt)" which in English is died of wounds received (missing in action or presumed dead) due to combat.

Abbreviations

German abbreviations are used extensively throughout the volumes which can cause confusion in translation. Some abbreviations used in the older volumes are slightly different from those in the newer series. In the examples below, see those for Viscount & Viscountess. It is important to refer to the "Legends and Advice" section in the front of each volume.

• a = auf, an, am translates to on, upon | at, to, on | on the, in the, during the
• A = Alte(r) is age, old age (the older)
• AB = Augsburgischen Bekenntnisses (lutherisch) is Augsburgian Confession (Lutheran)
• a d H = aus dem Hause is of the house
• Ä = Ältere(r) is older, elder, elderly
• Äbt = Äbtissin is Abbess
• v = von, van is of or from
• Vcde = Vizconde is Viscount
• Vcds = Vizcondesa is Viscountess
• Vcte = Vicomte is Viscount
• Vcts = Vicomtesse is Viscountess
• venez venezianisch(er) Venice, Venetian(s)
• verk = verkauft is sold
• verm = vermißt is missing (as in missing in action)
• verw = verwitwet(e) is widowed
• Viscde = Visconde is Viscount
• Viscdsa = Viscondesa is Viscountess
• Vizekg = Vizekönig' is Viceroy
• vö = vorderösterreichisch(er) is outer Austria, outer Austrian(s)

Online index

The current publisher of the Europäische Stammtafeln, Vittorio Klostermann, has provided an online primary family or surname index in German to current volumes 1 to 29 by first surname letter. This does not include non-primary or secondary surnames or families of spouses and children marriages.

A brief explanation to the online index. "The Roman numeral is the volume number and the Arabic numeral is the table number." Examples:

• Craon, bâtard de (Nevers) III/720, 722 = Craon, the bastard (Nevers) Volume III (3) / table numbers 720, 722.
• Craon, Dame de (Vitré) III/719 = Craon, the Lady (Vitré) Volume III (3) / table number 719.

  - Note: The Meuse is a major European river, rising in France and flowing through Belgium and the Netherlands before draining into the North Sea. The Rhine runs from the Swiss canton of Grisons in the southeastern Swiss Alps through Germany and eventually flows into the North Sea coast in the Netherlands.
• 19: Zwischen Weser und Oder = Between the Weser and the Oder
  - Note: The Weser is formed at Hannoversch Münden by the confluence of the rivers Fulda and Werra flowing through Lower Saxony, then reaching Bremen before emptying 50 km further north at Bremerhaven into the North Sea. The Oder rises in the Czech Republic and flows (generally north- and northwest-ward) through western Poland, later forming 187 kilometres (116 mi) of the border between Poland and Germany, part of the Oder-Neisse line. The river ultimately flows into the Szczecin Lagoon north of Szczecin and then into three branches (the Dziwna, Świna and Peene) that empty into the Gulf of Pomerania of the Baltic Sea.
