History
EASL was founded by the German physician Gustav-Adolf Martini[1] in April 1966, in Marburg, Germany, to promote research on the liver and its pathology and to improve therapy for liver disorders.[2] EASL's founding was inspired by the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD, created in November 1949) and the International Association for the Study of the Liver (IASL, created in 1958).[3]
Structure
EASL is a non-profit organization, composed solely of individual members, that performs its duties under a written constitution managed by the EASL Governing Board made up of 11 elected members: the Secretary General, the Vice-Secretary, the Scientific Committee (five persons), the Treasurer, the Educational Councillors (two persons), and the European Policy Councillor.
EASL members meet once a year at the Business Meeting held during the International Liver Congress.

International Liver Congress™
The International Liver Congress™ is a scientific meeting for clinicians and researchers to receive information on the latest research, perspectives and treatments of liver disease.[5]
The 46th International Liver Congress™ 2011 was held in Berlin, Germany from 30 March to 3 April with 8062 attendees and 2459 abstracts accepted.[6]
The 47th International Liver Congress™ 2012 was held in Barcelona, Spain from 18 April to 21 April with 9417 attendees and 2521 abstracts accepted.[7]
The 48th International Liver Congress™ 2013 was held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands from 24 April to 28 April with 9612 attendees and 2743 abstracts accepted.[8]
The 49th International Liver Congress™ 2014 was held in London, United Kingdom from 9 April to 13 April with 10806 attendees and 2938 abstracts accepted.[9]
The 50th International Liver Congress™ 2015 was held in Vienna, Austria from 22 April to 26 April.[10]
Journal of Hepatology
The Journal of Hepatology is edited by EASL and published by Elsevier. The journal publishes original papers, reviews, case reports and letters to the Editor about clinical and basic research in the field of hepatology.[11]

EASL offers resources for the following fellowships: Physician Scientist Fellowships, Post-doc Research Fellowship, Entry-level Research Fellowship, Short-term Training Fellowship.
