Faculty of Performing Arts, (Hindi: प्रदर्शन कला संकाय) (a.k.a Performing Arts faculty) is a faculty in the Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, India which offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate courses in performing arts. It was founded in 1950 and had several renowned and award winning artists and musicians as faculty members.[1][2]

History

Faculty of Performing Arts was started by Pandit Omkarnath Thakur in 1950. The faculty was initially instituted as a college and was called "Music and Fine Arts". In 1966, Pandit Govind Malviya and founder Principal Sangeet Martand Pandit Omkarnath Thakur in 1966 the college was restructured to a faculty, with three departments (Vocal music, Instrumental music and Musicology). Faculty of Performing Arts claims to start the first department of Musicology in India headed by eminent musicologists Prof. Prem Lata Sharma.[1]

Milestones

  • 1949: School of Music and Fine arts started.
  • 1950: Formally started the faculty as College of Music and Fine arts (Srikala Sangeet Bharati).
  • 1966: Status changed to faculty under the name "Faculty of Performing Arts".
  • 1973: Dance Section introduced.
  • 2007: Dance department establishment.
