Summary
A Great Northern Stirling 4-2-2. A total of 53 were built at Doncaster between 1870 and 1895. This engine looks in good condition so the original photo may well have been taken soon after it was put into service.
This photo was taken from an old original photo we came across while helping to clear the house of a deceased friend. I have uploaded it to Flickr in the hope that it might be interesting to steam enthusiasts.
