Summary

Barton Aerodrome, Eccles, Manchester Here are some of the planes on the field at Barton Aerodrome ( now named City Airport Manchester), home of the Lancashire Aero Club (the country's oldest flying club) and the Greater Manchester Police Helicopter. Behind the planes stands the 1933-built Control Tower (a listed building!). This aerodrome was the first municipal airport in Britain and remained in use until it became inadequate for air transport operations in the late 1930s, when the new airport at Ringway was opened.
