Summary
Animation of the history of CERN membership on a map of Europe.
Descriptions of individual frames (each frame displays for one second):
- Founding CERN member states in 1954–1958 (map of 1989).
- Belgium, France, Federal Republic of Germany, Italia, Greece, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, United Kingdom, and Yugoslavia.
- CERN member states in 1959–1960.
- Austria joined in 1959.
- CERN member states in 1961–1968 (map borders from 1989).
- Yugoslavia left, and Spain joined in 1961.
- CERN member states in 1969–1982 (map borders from 1989).
- Spain left in 1969.
- CERN member states in 1983–1984 (map borders from 1989).

- CERN member states in 1985–1990 (map borders from 1989).
- Portugal joined in 1985.
- CERN member states in 1991 (map borders from 2008: the former Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, and USSR are dissolved, each split into several independant countries).
- Poland joined in 1991, and the former Democratic Republic of Germany was unified within the Federal Republic of Germany.
- CERN member states in 1992 (map borders from 2008).
- Hungary joined in 1992.
- CERN member states in 1993–1988 (map borders from 2008).
- The Czech Republic and Slovakia joined in 1993.
- CERN member states in 1999 (map borders from 2008).
