Summary
Portrait of Infante Carlos María Isidro of Spain, by court painter Vicente López Portaña. Carlos was brother of Ferdinand VII of Spain, and his next in line in the Spanish Salic law of succession due to there being no direct male heir. However, when Ferdinand issued the Pragmatic Sanction of 1830, the succession then passed on to his daughter Isabella II of Spain as his first child (regardless of gender). This led to the Carlist Wars upon Ferdinand's death, a series of immensely bloody civil wars in Spain during the 19th century.
