The library was built in 1888, and was the first <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnegie_library" class="extiw" title="en:Carnegie library">Carnegie library</a> in the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States" class="extiw" title="en:United States">United States</a>.<a rel="nofollow" class="external autonumber" href="http://www.workingclassstudies.pitt.edu/threeriverstours.php">[1]</a> Architect: <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Halsey_Wood" class="extiw" title="en:William Halsey Wood">William Halsey Wood</a>. An addition was added in 1893, architects <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Longfellow,_Alden_%26_Harlow" class="extiw" title="en:Longfellow, Alden & Harlow">Longfellow, Alden & Harlow</a>. Architectural style: <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richardsonian_Romanesque" class="extiw" title="en:Richardsonian Romanesque">Richardsonian Romanesque</a>. Supposedly, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Braddock%27s_Defeat" class="extiw" title="en:Braddock's Defeat">Braddock's Defeat</a> occurred about two blocks to the right of this view in July 1755. The library is on the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Register_of_Historic_Places_listings_in_Allegheny_County,_Pennsylvania" class="extiw" title="en:National Register of Historic Places listings in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania">National Register of Historic Places</a> and the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Pittsburgh_History_and_Landmarks_Foundation_Historic_Landmarks" class="extiw" title="en:List of Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation Historic Landmarks">List of Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation Historic Landmarks</a>.
