Summary

This is an example of a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-dimensional_space" class="extiw" title="w:Two-dimensional space">two-dimensional</a> FEM (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/finite_element_method" class="extiw" title="w:finite element method">finite element method</a>) mesh for a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cylinder_(geometry)" class="extiw" title="w:Cylinder (geometry)">cylindrically</a> shaped <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electromagnetic_shielding#Magnetic_shielding" class="extiw" title="w:Electromagnetic shielding">magnetic shield</a>. The mesh is created by an analyst prior to solution by the FEM software. In this case "two dimensional" means that the picture shows a flat cross section of an assembly that extends to a large distance at right-angles to the paper (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cartesian_coordinate_system" class="extiw" title="w:Cartesian coordinate system">Cartesian</a> coordinates). The rectangle outlined at the right of the picture has been designated the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrical_conductor" class="extiw" title="w:Electrical conductor">conducting</a> component, which carries the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_current" class="extiw" title="w:Electric current">electric current</a> that <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electromagnet" class="extiw" title="w:Electromagnet">creates</a> the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/magnetic_field" class="extiw" title="w:magnetic field">magnetic field</a>. The cylindrical part has been designated to be a material of high magnetic <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Permeability_(electromagnetism)" class="extiw" title="w:Permeability (electromagnetism)">permeability</a> (for example <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferromagnetism" class="extiw" title="w:Ferromagnetism">iron</a>). The gray areas have been designated air. The mesh is divided into smaller triangles inside the cylinder, which is an area where the lines of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnetic_field#Definitions.2C_units.2C_and_measurement" class="extiw" title="w:Magnetic field">magnetic flux</a> will be more concentrated.
