Massey Rhind">John Massey Rhind</a>, and dedicated on July 3, 1909, the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bronze_sculpture" class="extiw" title="en:Bronze sculpture">bronze sculpture</a> honors Benjamin F. Stephenson, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doctor_of_Medicine" class="extiw" title="en:Doctor of Medicine">M.D.</a>, founder of the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Army_of_the_Republic" class="extiw" title="en:Grand Army of the Republic">Grand Army of the Republic</a> (G.A.R.).

The G.A.R. Memorial is one of seventeen <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Civil_War" class="extiw" title="en:American Civil War">Civil War</a> monuments in Washington, D.C., that were collectively listed on the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Register_of_Historic_Places" class="extiw" title="en:National Register of Historic Places">National Register of Historic Places</a> (NRHP) on September 20, 1978. In addition, the G.A.R. Memorial is designated as a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contributing_property" class="extiw" title="en:Contributing property">contributing property</a> to the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pennsylvania_Avenue_National_Historic_Site" class="extiw" title="en:Pennsylvania Avenue National Historic Site">Pennsylvania Avenue National Historic Site</a>, listed on the NRHP on October 15, 1966, and the Downtown Historic District, listed on the NRHP on September 22, 2001.
