Summary
Carved wooden surround by Grinling Gibbons 1676-1680 for Cassiobury House, Watford, England. It is thought that the hole in the centre is not as originally carved by Gibbons, who probably designed it to house a small painting. The shape suggests that it was enlarged, probably c.1805 during refurbishment work by James Wyatt, to accommodate a larger timepiece.
