James Francis "Jimmy" Durante was born on February 10, 1893 in Brooklyn, New York. A ragtime pianist, vaudeville star, and radio personality, he had a major hit with his 1933 novelty song "Inka Dinka Doo". He appeared in numerous films and television programs, did voice acting, and hosted The Jimmy Durante Show from 1954–56. His first wife, Jeanne Olson, died of a heart ailment in 1943.

Margaret "Margie" Little was born in 1919 and met Durante in 1944 while working as a hatcheck girl at the Copacabana. They married in 1960 and adopted a daughter, Cecilia Alicia.

Jimmy Durante retired from performing in 1972 after suffering a stroke that left him confined to a wheelchair. He died of pneumonia on January 29, 1980 in Santa Monica, California at age 86. Margaret Durante died in 2009 at age 90 and was buried with her husband.
