Summary

Example of light emission cones on a semiconductor chip, with a critical angle of 20 degrees. Left example is for a fully transparent semiconductor, right image shows the half-cones where the bottom is a fully opaque material. A real LED or solar cell may exhibit some internal absorption of light emission, so the longer, larger side cones may not emit as much light than the shorter, narrower top and bottom cones.
