Built by slave labor as a water diversion tunnel in 1819, it was the first significant tunnel in the United States. Now a part of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harpeth_River_State_Park" class="extiw" title="w:Harpeth River State Park">Harpeth River State Park</a>, it has been designated a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Historic_Landmark" class="extiw" title="w:National Historic Landmark">National Historic Landmark</a>.
