Summary

Ganymede appears more like Mars than the Moon or Mercury in this close-in spin-scan image from Pioneer 10. Earlier eclipse observations from Earth suggested that Ganymede has a surface of high porosity, the upper half-inch of which might be composed of loose, fine-grained rock.
