Summary

The south transept rose at Notre-Dame de Chartres dates from c. 1221-30, and features as its theme the Glorification of Christ according to the Book of Revelation. Enthroned in the central oculus, Christ is surrounded by angels, the Four Beasts, and the Twenty-Four Elders of the Apocalypse. The central lancet window below shows the Virgin carrying the infant Christ. The two lancets on either side feature the main prophets of the Old Testament carrying on their shoulders the four Evangelists (from left to right: Jeremiah carrying Luke, Isaiah carrying Matthew, Ezekiel carrying John, and Daniel carrying Mark). The lowest register of the central lancet features the arms of Dreux-Brittany (chequers and ermines). To the right are Pierre Mauclerc and his son, and to the left his wife and daughter.

Diameter of the rose: 10.56 m. Dimensions of the lancets (left to right): 6.33 x 1.67 m, 6.33 x 1.67 m, 6.36 x 1.67 m, 6.36 x 1.67 m, 6.36 x 1.69 m.
