Summary

The <a href="//commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Porphyry" class="mw-redirect" title="Porphyry">porphyry</a> labrum (vessel or basin with an overhanging lip), possibily from a Roman thermal building, which is said to heve been reused in 526 AD as <a href="//commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Sarcophagus" class="mw-redirect" title="Sarcophagus">sarcophagus</a> for king <a href="//commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Theodoric" class="mw-redirect" title="Theodoric">Theodoric</a> in Ravenna, Italy. The manufact was subsequently reused after 540 AD by the new rulers, the Byzantines, in the facade of the so-called "Palace of Theodoric" in Ravenna, whence it was moved in 1913 to the <a href="//commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Mausoleum_of_Theoderic_in_Ravenna" class="mw-redirect" title="Mausoleum of Theoderic in Ravenna">Mausoleum of Theoderic in Ravenna</a>, where it stands today.
