A <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_Martin_X-35" class="extiw" title="en:Lockheed Martin X-35">Lockheed Martin X-35A</a> Joint Strike Fighter concept demonstrator receives fuel from a U.S. Air Force <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_KC-135_Stratotanker" class="extiw" title="en:Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker">Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker</a> during a test mission over California's Mojave Desert on Nov. 7, 2000. The Joint Strike Fighter is the military's next generation, multi-role, strike aircraft designed to complement the Navy F/A-18 and the Air Force F-22 aircraft. Lockheed Martin and Boeing were both awarded cost-plus-fixed-fee-contracts for the Joint Strike Fighter Concept Demonstration Program. The program will feature flying aircraft demonstrators, ground and flight technology demonstrations, and continued refinement of the contractor's weapons system concept for the next generation strike fighter for the Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Royal Navy. After making about 50 test flights, the X-35A and Boeing's X-32A will be tested at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Md.
