It is administered by the York Region District School Board, and is part of the City of Vaughan. Opened in 2003, most of the students were from Vellore Woods Public School, a neighbouring school that is Fossil's rival. The school has gained more students throughout the years. Fossil mainly has two neighbouring schools: Vellore Woods Public School and St. Veronica. In 2012, Pierre Berton Public School was built very near to Fossil Hill which many students left to go to and creating a new rivalry. Like Vellore Woods and other schools around the area, Fossil Hill Public School teaches kindergarten through grade eight. After students leave the school, they typically go to Emily Carr Secondary School or they may go to St. Jean de Brebeuf. In the summer of 2013, Fossil hill went through a major renovation adding new classrooms and Kindergarten classes. This renovation was to accommodate the new Full-day Kindergarten program. Notably, Fossil Hill has a park for younger students to enjoy, a soccer net, a basketball court, a track and many hills for students to roam around and play. Recess in the morning is 20 minutes while after lunch is 40 minutes. Fossil Hill has won numerous awards for being an Eco-friendly school and its actions put forth to teach students to preserve the planet. Upon graduation, a student is eligible for numerous awards including, Athlete of the year, Arts award, Academic Excellence award, Principal's award and Valedictorian. Along with that, students who average 79% or above on their final report cards earns honor roll. Its music program is recognized as one of the best for Elementary Schools in York Region. With numerous instruments like the flute, saxophone, and clarinet, students have a variety to choose from.

Fossil Hill ran a Tile program which ran from 2003-2013. This program enabled the graduating class of students to design their own tiles and display them around the school, keeping their mark on Fossil Hill.
