Francis Hartwell Henslowe

Francis Hartwell Henslowe (1811-1878), civil servant and composer. He was the son of Edward Prentis Henslowe (1772-1857), who was the son of Sir John Henslow. His mother Cecilia Maria was the daughter of musician François Hippolyte Barthélémon. Henslowe emigrated to Sydney In 1839, arriving Hobart, 1841. He was appointed private secretary to Sir John Franklin 1811 and Police Magistrate at Campbell Town In 1843. In 1851 he was appointed Clerk of the Executive and Legislative Councils where he "from his amiable and obliging disposition secured the esteem of the members of the House."[1] He retired on grounds of indifferent health and weak eyesight in 1864.
Soon afterwards he embarked for India where he accepted the position of manager of one of the large Madras Irrigation Companies which he held for ten years with a salary of 1, 500 pounds a year. He eventually retired to England three or four years before his death in 1878.
Henslowe married the daughter of Canon Allwood, of the diocese of New South Wales, by whom he had two sons and two daughters. Both sons held lucrative appointments in the Survey Department of Madras.
