Francisco Recreio (3 August 1800 – 12 December 1857) was a Portuguese Roman Catholic priest, synodal examiner and writer, known in particular for his journalistic campaigns against the revolutionary agitation of the time.

Biography

According to Inocêncio Francisco da Silva, he was born in Cacilhas,[lower-alpha 1] the son of Bento Rasqueiro e Tomasia Maria. He was educated by the Oratorians, joining the society of secular presbyters in 1822.

Recreio lived in the convent of Espirito Santo, when, for unknown reasons, he left his habit on January 28, 1831, and immediately launched himself openly into political life. He began to write a satirical and anonymous newspaper, entitled O Cacete (1831–1833),[1] similar in editorial line and style to the Besta Esfolada.

Afterwards he remained away from active life, both literary and political, until January 31, 1844, when the Royal Academy of Sciences elected him its effective fellow and librarian.

In 1850, Recreio was among the priests involved in a bitter polemic with liberal historian Alexandre Herculano concerning the Battle of Ourique. In 1857, he entered the controversy sparked by the suspension of the archbishop of Mytilene, Domingos José de Sousa Magalhães, ordered by Cardinal Patriarch Guilherme Henriques de Carvalho.

As synodal examiner,[lower-alpha 2] he wrote a preface to the edition of the Holy Bible, based on the Portuguese version by António Pereira de Figueiredo, which was completed in 1857; and another preface, which especially precedes the version of the New Testament.[2]

Francisco Recreio died in Lisbon victim of yellow fever.
