Franklin Township is a township in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 1,757 at the 2010 census.[1]

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 13.1 square miles (33.8 km2), of which 12.7 square miles (32.9 km2) is land and 0.35 square miles (0.9 km2), or 2.69%, is water.

Demographics

As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 1,601 people, 629 households, and 481 families residing in the township. The population density was 125.9 people per square mile (48.6/km2). There were 679 housing units at an average density of 53.4/sq mi (20.6/km2). The racial makeup of the township was 99.56% White, 0.06% African American, 0.06% from other races, and 0.31% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.87% of the population.

There were 629 households, out of which 31.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.3% were married couples living together, 7.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.4% were non-families. 20.0% of all households were made up of individuals, and 7.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 2.94.

In the township the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 30.0% from 25 to 44, 28.3% from 45 to 64, and 12.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 102.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.3 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $45,150, and the median income for a family was $51,310. Males had a median income of $36,563 versus $25,045 for females. The per capita income for the township was $21,014. About 5.6% of families and 7.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.9% of those under age 18 and 7.8% of those age 65 or over.
