Friary Court is a courtyard in St James's Palace, in London. It is overlooked by the Proclamation Gallery, where a new English or British sovereign sometimes appears for the first time after their accession to the throne.[citation needed] Queen Victoria was thus first seen by her subjects.
The Proclamation Gallery is also where the Accession Council by tradition meets after the death of a reigning monarch to determine the new monarch, and to take their oath.
