Gąski [ˈɡɔ̃ski] (German: Funkenhagen) is a village in the administrative district of Gmina Mielno, within Koszalin County, West Pomeranian Voivodeship, in north-western Poland.[1] It lies approximately 18 kilometres (11 mi) west of Koszalin and 127 km (79 mi) north-east of the regional capital Szczecin.

Before 1945 the area was part of Germany. After World War II the region was placed under Polish administration and ethnically cleansed according to the post-war Potsdam Agreement. The native German populace was expelled and replaced with Poles. For the history of the region, see History of Pomerania.

The village has a population of 400.

Gąski is one of the most popular tourists' destination on Polish coast for its beautiful beaches and nature, aiming at sustainable development.[2]

Protests against construction of a nuclear power station

In effect of intensive actions and civic mobilisation in February 2012 referendum took place in which 94% of citizens of Mielno voted against location of nuclear power station in the village of Gąski. Citizens' protest had been supported by members of two biggest parliamentary political groups (otherwise supportive for nuclear power): Civic Platform (Koszalin MP Marek Hok) and Law and Justice (Koszalin MP Czesław Hoc),[3] as well as non-parliamentary Green Party [4] and councillors of nearby city of Kołobrzeg. "Ecological Kołobrzeg" association also supported protests in 2012.[5]

Despite protests and referendum results Polish government still insists on the location of NPP in Gąski[6] although entire Polish nuclear programme has 7 years delay (as of 2015)[7] - first NPP is now planned not earlier than 2027 (initial plan was 2020 and it government related its construction to goals of 2020 climate-energy package of the EU).

Green Institute Foundation supports Gąski and Mielno to develop its own renewable energy capacity (prosumer, co-operative or communal) co-organising "Energy democracy" campaign together with Mielno authorities.[8][9]
