Comann Gàidhlig Mhosgo ("Gaelic Society of Moscow") was founded by a Russian scholar Maria Koroleva on November 30, 1999.[1] The aim was to establish the tradition of Scottish Gaelic Studies in Russia and introduce the related courses to the Moscow State University (Scottish Gaelic courses at university level are currently offered only in five European countries).[2] This aim was successfully accomplished, 8 courses[3] in Scottish and Celtic studies were designed for the Faculty of Philology and the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Area Studies. Subsequently, the Society expanded to embrace all Celtic Languages and Area Studies. This established tradition formed the firm basis for the development of Celtic Studies in Russia, brought together specialists from Russia, Germany and the UK. The society encourages teaching, research, translation and various arts. It offers free classes of Scottish Gaelic, free distance-learning courses in Old Irish and Gaelic,[4] provides help to learners of Gaelic regardless of age or nationality all over Russia and CIS. It is also the first in Russia to possess its own tartan.[5]
