Geng Tan (谭耕) is a Canadian politician, who was elected to represent the riding of Don Valley North in the House of Commons of Canada in the Canadian federal election, 2015.[1] Tan is the first Canadian MP of a Mandarin-speaking background elected to the House of Commons.[2]

Nomination controversy

Tan's nomination as the Liberal Party candidate was one of several nomination controversies leading up to the 2015 election, where all three major parties promised open nominations. Tan was accused of almost solely signing up members of Mandarin-Chinese origin to contest the Liberal nomination in Don Valley North, defeating the favoured candidate by a large margin.[3] Tan's opponents accused the Liberal Party of pushing the nomination to a later date than it was originally planned, allowing Tan to sign up enough members to win the nomination. Tan's opponents also accused him of signing up members who did not pay for their memberships, calling the nomination "a farce."[4]
