The Gordon Craig Theatre is the only theatre in Stevenage, Hertfordshire. The theatre is housed in the Stevenage Arts & Leisure Centre, which is situated on Lytton Way, directly opposite the Railway Station and is connected to the station by a bridge extending across the dual carriageway. The Arts & Leisure Centre is accessible by train (via the bridge), car (via Lytton Way), bus (via Stevenage Bus Station) and foot (via the Town Centre). The theatre was officially opened in 1976 by HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.[1]
The theatre is comprised of two halls. The smallest of these is the Theatre itself, which has a capacity of 501. The stage is a proscenium and thrust stage and measures 24.21m wide and 7.92m deep.[2] The theatre boasts a proud tradition of presenting Plays, Pantomime, Opera, Dance and Orchestral Concerts.[3] The second and largest hall is the Concert Hall, which has a capacity of 1,200. The concert hall plays host to a variety of shows including Live Music and Comedy. Notable past acts include: Jimmy Carr,[4]Jim Davidson,[5] Milton Jones[6] and Rhydian.[7]
