Government Medical College, Azamgarh(Hindi: राजकीय मेडिकल कालेज, आजमगढ़) or Government Medical College & Super Facility Hospital, Azamgarh is a state medical college located in Chakrapanpur of Azamgarh district, Uttar Pradesh, India. It is affiliated to King George's Medical University, Lucknow.

The college has guidance and mentorship of King George's Medical University(KGMU), Lucknow, one of the top institutes in India and BRD Medical College, Gorakhpur.[2]

History

In 2006, Government of Uttar Pradesh decided to set up a new medical college and hospital at Azamgarh in the eastern part of the state at an approximate cost of Rs 300 crore.[3] In 2013, the institute was recognized for 100 M.B.B.S. seats by Medical Council of India (MCI).

Courses

Every year 100 students are allowed to take admission in the M.B.B.S. course[1] by two competitive examinations. The prestigious AIPMT accounts for the filling of 15% seats and remaining 85% seats are filled through a state-level entrance examination UP-CPMT.

Campus

The Government Medical College & Super Facility Hospital is situated at Chakrapanpur of the historic city of Azamgarh in U.P.. Chakrapanpur is about 20 km from Azamgarh city.

As the institution grew, more and more departments were created in new buildings. Therefore, the campus really consists of a conglomeration of buildings housing the various departments, which came up over a period of 3 years as and when the need was felt. There are separate buildings for Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Cardiology, Rheumatology, Pathology, Pharmacology, Anaesthesiology, Ophthalmology, Urology and Community Medicine.

Library

Government Medical College & Super Facility Hospital, Library and Information Centre is located in an independent block which is one of the repositories of medical knowledge and form an integral part of the institution. It is rich in its collection over the past decades. The library has developed the resources and collection that is required for the student community of the institution. Originally, textbooks were simply the teacher’s lecture notes which were often sold lecture by lecture. Even today, many textbooks remain only slightly more than lecture notes. But Government Medical College & Super Facility Hospital Library recognized the importance of textbooks and reference materials in higher education from inception and is firmly trying to extend the best to its users.

Super Facility Hospital

It is one of the reputed and leading hospitals established by the State Govt. of Uttar Pradesh. In the year 2008 with only Out Patient Department and it catered to the needs of the localities developing around Azamgarh township. Later in the year 2008, Indoor Services were started in the specialized fields of General Surgery, Medicine, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, ENT, Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Pathology, Radiology, Dermatology and Dentistry. Initially the hospital had strength of only ten beds. However, in the year 2008, this strength was increased to 140 in order to fulfill the demands of the ever-increasing number of patients. The Government Medical College has since witnessed a sure and steady growth catering to the continuous medical needs of the public. In the year 2008, one of the best Physiotherapy Units of the State was established in the hospital with all modern equipments and having a pleasant music filled air-conditioned atmosphere, which is one of the unique features available only in this Hospital.
