Greenmount, formerly known as Greenmount West,[2] and prior to that as Emu Creek, is a rural town on the Darling Downs in the state of Queensland, Australia. It is located just off the New England Highway 32 kilometres (20 mi) south of the regional city of Toowoomba. At the 2006 census, Greenmount had a population of 336.[1]

History

The region was settled by graziers in the 1840s; farming activities remain the chief source of employment in Greenmount today.[3]

The Greenmount War Memorial was dedicated on 11 December 1922 by Queensland Governor, Matthew Nathan.[4]

Facilities

Library services in Greenmount are provided by the Toowoomba Regional Council's mobile library service. The van visits Pilton Street every Friday.[5]

Greenmount features a number of parks that provide facilities and recreation areas, including Bicentennial Memorial Park,[6] Jack Derrick Park,[7] and the Recreation Reserve.[8] Steele Rudd Park, dedicated to the Rudd family, is located in East Greenmount and features replica historical buildings.[9]

Notable residents

Author Steele Rudd (Arthur Hoey Davis), of Dad and Dave fame, lived in the region and attended the local school until the age of twelve.[10]
