Harvard Business X, or HBX, is an online learning initiative announced by the Harvard Business School in March 2014 to host online university-level courses initially focusing on college juniors or seniors as well as executives and managers in business. HBX will be enrolling 500 to 1,000 students when the initial cohort of admitted students, referred to as CORe launches in June.[3]

Functionality and Organization

HBX will debut with three components: CORe (acronym for Credential for Readiness) which targets college juniors and seniors preparing for the job market, special elective courses by high profile faculty[4] and HBX Live[5] which is a virtual classroom experience.[6] CORe students must apply for admissions and tuition cost is $1,500 for all three CORe classes.[7] Bharat Anand[8] is the faculty chair of HBX. Jana Kierstead[9] is the executive director of HBX.

Courses

There are 6 courses announced to be offered:

  • Disruptive Innovation: taught by Clayton Christensen. Disruptive Innovation will teach innovative frameworks to business leaders, offering guidance on how to approach their own challenges to create innovative growth solutions.
  • Introduction to Innovation and Entrepreneurship: taught by Bill Sahlman and Joe Lassiter. This course will give you a powerful toolkit for forming a new venture and tackling the key issues that arise at various stages as the venture evolves.
  • Microeconomics of Competitiveness: taught by Michael Porter. This course will lead students on an exploration of the factors that determine competitiveness and allow students to view successful economic development from a bottom-up, microeconomic perspective.
  • Business Analytics: taught by Janice Hammond. The Business Analytics course introduces quantitative methods used to analyze data and make better management decisions.
  • Economics for Managers: taught by Bharat Anand. In this course, students will learn a set of economic ideas that will unlock puzzles like these. Students will learn about topics like customer demand, supplier cost, markets and competition. Students will learn how businesses think about pricing, production, and differentiation.
  • Financial Accounting: taught by V.G. Narayanan. This course covers basic financial accounting. Students will learn how to record transactions using journal entries, how to post them to T accounts, how to prepare a trial balance and then use this trial balance to prepare the Balance Sheet, Income Statement, and the Cash Flow Statement.
