Heather Humphreys is an Irish Fine Gael politician and the Minister for Regional Development, Rural Affairs, Arts and the Gaeltacht.[1] She was elected at the 2011 general election as a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Cavan–Monaghan constituency.[2]
From Aghabog near Newbliss in County Monaghan, Humphreys was co-opted on to Monaghan County Council in 2003 and was twice re-elected in 2004 and 2009.[2] She was elected as Mayor of Monaghan County Council in 2009.[3] She was previously Chair of the Council's Strategic Policy Committee on Planning and Economic Development.
Humphreys was educated at St Aidan's Comprehensive School in Cootehill, County Cavan. She worked for a number of years with Ulster Bank. Prior to her election to Dáil Éireann she was Manager of Cootehill Credit Union.[3]
She was appointed as Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht in July 2014.[4] She is the only Presbyterian member of the Oireachtas.[5] On her role as minister in charge of the 2016 Easter Rising centenary celebrations, she said: "Given my background as a Protestant and an Ulsterwoman who is a proud Irish republican, I appreciate the need to respect the differing traditions on this island."[6]
