Hubertus Prinz von Sachsen-Coburg und Gotha (Hubertus Alexis Richard Ernst Eduard; born 8 December 1961) is the eldest son of Prince Ernst Leopold of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and his first wife Ingeborg Henig.

Early life

Hubertus was born at Herrenberg, West Germany. His paternal grandparents were Johann Leopold, Hereditary Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, the eldest son of Charles Edward, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (only son of Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany), and his wife, Baroness Feodora von der Horst.

Hubertus has five half-siblings: Princess Viktoria, Prince Ernst-Josias, Prince Charles Edward, Prince Ferdinand-Christian and Princess Alice-Sybilla.

His grandfather was heir-apparent to the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha until the forced abdication of his great-grandfather on 18 November 1918, to Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. The abdication was a result of the German Revolution. As the marriage of his grandparents was considered morganatic he has no rights to the succession to the Saxe-Coburg and Gotha ducal throne.

Marriage

On 9 March 1993 at Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, Hubertus married Barbara Weissmann (b. Kaiserslautern, 21 May 1959), daughter of Eugen Weissmann and wife Renate Spettel.[1]

They have one child:

  • Sebastian Prinz von Sachsen-Coburg und Gotha (b. Kaiserslautern, 16 January 1994)

Duke of Albany

Although not having any rights of succession to the ducal throne of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, he has the right to petition for the restoration of the Dukedom of Albany and other British peerages. At the death of his father in 1996, he became the titular pretender of the Dukedom of Albany, which was removed in 1919 under the Titles Deprivation Act of 1917. Should the Dukedom be restored he would be the 3rd Duke of Albany.

Also, as a descendant of Queen Victoria he is in the line of succession to the British throne.
