Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania (English: The bride of Humpty Sharma, abbreviated as HSKD) is a 2014 Hindi romantic-comedy film[1] directed by Shashank Khaitan and produced by Karan Johar.[3][4] It features Varun Dhawan as Humpty Sharma and Alia Bhatt as Kavya Pratap Singh in the lead roles.[5][6] HSKD was released on 11 July 2014 and became a box office success.

Plot

When Kavya Pratap Singh, a chirpy, feisty young women from Ambala, goes to Delhi for her marriage shopping for a designer lehenga, she meets a young, carefree Delhi lad, Humpty Sharma. Humpty's father is the owner of a campus bookstore, where Humpty and his two best friends, Shonty and Poplu, have grown up together. Kavya is unattainable for Humpty initially, which makes her even more endearing to him. But, being a Delhi guy, he won't give up so easily. With some help from his two best friends, he finds out all about her and through an interesting turn of events (including a ploy to save Kavya's friend Gurpreet's marriage), they start growing closer to each other. The more time they spend with each other, their love-hate banter grows, but their chemistry is apparent. They are different, yet very similar as people. They are young, feisty and carefree, and it's the spurge of life which attracts them to each other. Kavya has to return back to Ambala within a month. They end up sleeping together.

As per plan, once Kavya's trip ends, she heads back to Ambala, knowing very well that her father, the very strict, yet loving Mr. Singh, would never accept her love for Humpty. But even though they weren't looking for love, love happened.

So Humpty, accompanied by his two friends, decides to go to get Kavya. That's the beginning of a journey for him that he wouldn't have imagined undertaking even in the wildest of his dreams. Humpty, against all odds, convinces Kavya's family to agree to his alliance with her. But Kavya's father challenged Humpty to show him one reason Kavya should not marry her fiancé ,and agreed to accept if done as said. How he does this forms the rest of the story. However Kavya's dad accepts Humpty in the end and Kavya and Humpty reunites at the end of the story.

Development

In August 2013, Dharma Productions confirmed that Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt would be portraying the main leads. This was the second time the pair will be seen together in a movie after Student of the Year. And it was also their second time working with the producer Karan Johar, who directed Student of the Year.[7] Karan Johar in a press conference said that the movie is a tribute to the cult romantic classic Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge.

Filming took place in Mumbai with a second schedule completed on 12 March in Punjab.[8][9] Filming took place in Vaseela in March 2014 with more planned for Ambala and Chandigarh.[10] The filming was completed in Ambala, Chandigarh, Khan Market and Delhi University,[11] at a budget of ₹17.5 crore (US$2.6 million).[2]

The song "Saturday Saturday" was filmed in Mumbai Film City recreating the Colosseum for a futuristic avatar song choreographed by Ahmed Khan.[12]

The film's soundtrack is composed by Sachin-Jigar and Sharib-Toshi with lyrics penned by Kumaar, Irshad Kamil and movie director Shashank Khaitan.[1]

The song "Saturday Saturday" was the first single track released, which was originally composed by The Titans, Badshah and recreated by Sharib-Toshi. The song "Samjhawan" was originally taken from 2010 Punjabi film Virsa music done by Jawad Ahmed and sang by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Farah Anwar. The second single track "Mein Tenu Samjhawan Ki" is sung by actress Alia Bhatt while lyrics have been given by lyricist Kumaar. DJ Chetas composed The Humpty Mashup also known as Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania Mashup.

In May 2016, it was announced that Khaitan will write and direct another romantic comedy under the Dharma Productions banner with Dhawan and Bhatt playing the lead roles. Although the two films will have different plots and characters, the film is considered the second installment in a franchise that began with Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania. The second installment, titled Badrinath Ki Dulhania, is currently set to release in March 2017.[13]
