Huntingtown High School is located at 4125 North Solomons Island Road, Huntingtown, Maryland (MD), 20639. Completed and opened in 2004, HHS is currently home to some (estimated) fithteen hundred students from grades 9 to 12. Huntingtown High School (HHS) is in Calvert County, and is part of the Calvert County Public Schools, (CCPS).

Campus

The HHS campus features, aside from its building and traffic pattern: a football field, softball and baseball fields, a track, eight tennis courts and an assortment of practice fields and storm-water management ponds. The large, 3-story building is surrounded by these and two parking lots exiting onto Maryland Route 4. There is also a nature trail/cross country path which runs through the woods surrounding the building.

Academics

Huntingtown High School is known nationally for its academic program, primarily for its Advanced Placement program, and was certified Gold by the U.S. News & World Report as one of the top high schools in the nation in terms of the Advanced Placement program. Maryland State Department of Education has recognized Huntingtown for five years in a row as a Distinguished Maryland High School. Huntingtown has been ranked as one of the top high schools in the nation since 2005, and has an Advanced Placement participation rate of 65 percent. Huntingtown offers 21 Advanced Placement courses, as well as honors and standard classes.

Athletics

HHS hosts a variety of sports teams directed by VaShawne Gross. The Hurricanes compete in the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference (SMAC) and the 3A South Region of the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association. Fall sports include football, boys' and girls' soccer, field hockey, cross country, golf, and volleyball. Winter sports include swimming, boys' and girls' basketball, indoor track, wrestling, and ice hockey. There are also cheer and dance teams for both the fall and winter. Spring sports include boys' and girls' lacrosse, softball, baseball, track and field, and tennis.

Football

The Hurricanes are led by head coach Kevin Gilligan. The Hurricanes have qualified for the playoffs every year since 2007. In 2008 and 2009, the Hurricanes won the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference Championship. The 2009 Hurricanes finished the regular season 10-0. In the playoffs, the Hurricanes defeated the Westlake Wolverines 46-0 to capture the 3A South Regional Championship. The following week, the Hurricanes defeated River Hill, the two-time defending Maryland 2A Champions. The Hurricanes victory snapped River Hill's 40-game winning streak. The Hurricanes advanced to the Maryland 3A State Championship game, where they fell to Linganore, 31-14. The 2010 season saw the Hurricanes finish 7-3 and clinch their 4th consecutive playoff berth, the first team in Calvert County to do so. In the 3A South Regional semifinal, the Hurricanes traveled to Westlake High School and defeated the 2010 SMAC champions 35-14. On November 19, 2010, the Hurricanes traveled to Friendly High School in an attempt to win back to back 3A South Championships, and were victorious, 52-16. The Hurricanes lost to Franklin on a last second touchdown by the Indians. In the 2012-2013 season the Hurricanes traveled back to the state championship in Baltimore where they once again fell to River Hill.

Boys Soccer

The Hurricanes boys soccer team posted an 11-1 record in the 2010 season, winning the school's first SMAC championship for boy's soccer. The team has reached the regional finals in the 3A playoffs three years running, losing each time. However, in 2012 they were able to defeat Northern and win the regionals finals. They moved on to the State Semi-Finals but lost to Reservoir 5-1.

Volleyball

The Hurricanes Volleyball team has been to the state semi-finals several times. From 2006-2008, the Lady Canes made it to the 3A state finals, but lost each time.

Swim Team

Huntingtown's Boy's Swim Team recently won the 2008 SMAC and 4A/3A South Regional Titles, Setting a Maryland State Record in the 200 yard medley relay. In 2009 the men's 11-1 season was capped off with a 2nd place SMAC and 4A/3A South Region finish and another state record, this time in the 200 yard freestyle relay (John Sheldon, Jonathan Morman, Dohrman, Morgan). The 2010 Men's team finished 2nd in SMAC and 4th in the 4A/3A South Region. Huntingtown has seen two of its graduates go on to swim at the college level. In 2012 the boys' team won the SMAC championship.

Ice Hockey

Huntingtown established an ice hockey team in 2007. The team won the Southern Division Championship the first year and has made it to the final four multiple times. In three years the team has won the Purple Puck and Chesapeake Cup multiple times. In the 2011-2012 Season the team made it to the MSHL state championship game where they fell to Atholton.

Softball

Huntingtown's softball team has won three Maryland 3A state titles (2005, 2006, 2007). The 2005 title was won in the Hurricanes' first year of varsity competition.

Baseball

The Huntingtown baseball team is managed by Guy Smith Jr. Huntingtown has been to the State playoffs three times: in 2006, 2007, and 2010; they have reached the State finals three times: in 2006, 2010 and 2016. The Hurricanes have also been SMAC Champions five times: in 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2016. They won their first state title on May 30, 2016 defeating Chesapeake High School of Pasedena 4-3. This was also the first state champion won by a boy's team as well as the first baseball champion won by a high school in Calvert County.

Track and Field

In the 2008 season, the boys track and field team ended the season with a perfect record of 12-0. The Girls Track and Field team also won the Maryland 3A Outdoor State Championship in 2011 under the direction of head coach Valerie Harrington.

Tennis

In 2008, Huntingtown went 14-0 and won the regular season SMAC title. In 2015, Huntingtown once again went undefeated with a record of 13-0 and won the regular season SMAC title.

Boys Lacrosse

The boys lacrosse team came in second in the SMAC in 2008, placing behind Northern High School.

Wrestling

The Huntingtown wrestling team is led by head coach Kevin Gilligan. After nine seasons of struggling to establish themselves as a respectable program, the 2013-2014 season saw the team capture both the SMAC duals and tournament championship, the 4A/3A South Regional duals and tournament championships, and become Maryland state duals semi-finalists. The school also had its second state champion wrestler, Dalonte Holland capture the 4A/3A 285 pound championship. The first state wrestling champion was 285lb Phil Riley, in the first year the school was opened. In 2014-2015, the wrestling team repeated as SMAC Duals and Tournament Champions, 3A/4A South Duals and Tournament Champions, and for the second time Maryland State Dual Semi-Finalists, losing a close match with North Hagerstown. In 2015, Huntingtown also finished in the top four of the state tournament for the first time in school history, with two state finalists.

Girls Soccer

In 2010, the girls soccer went to the 3A State Finals for the first time in school and county history, but lost to Reservoir, 1-0. In 2011, the girls soccer went to the 3A State Finals and won against River Hill 1-0

Programs in the Arts

Music

Huntingtown's Music Department is directed by Mr. Donald Naumann (Band), Mr. Daniel Boyer (Chorus), and Mrs. Sara Moran (String Orchestra). The department sends several students yearly to Maryland All-State music programs, as well as various other honors ensembles.

Theatre

Huntingtown's Eye of the Storm Productions (EOTSP), under the direction of Mr. Derek Anderson, has been recognized by the American Alliance for High School Theatre as one of the top 35 High School Programs in the country. The company produces a fall play and spring musical, in addition to "Black Box" shows throughout the year. The Eye of the Storms Productions is notable for producing famous musicals and plays, such as the successful The Phantom of the Opera and other musicals such as Footloose (musical). Along with musicals, EOTSP has produced plays such as A Midsummer Night's Dream. Huntingtown was one of the first high schools in the country to perform the musical In the Heights, which opened in the spring of 2013.

Journalism

The school's journalism program produces a news-magazine and yearbook annually.

Marching Band

The HHS Marching Hurricanes, directed by Mr. Donald Naumann, is composed of students playing a wide range wind and percussion instruments as well as many Colorguard members. The Marching Hurricanes, composed of about 65 instrumentalists and guard members at the time, earned second place in the 2007-2008 Atlantic Coast Championship (ACC), fourth place in the fall of 2008, and sixth place in November 2009.

Additional Programs

Robotics

The HHS Robotics team was established in 2009, and has competed three times in local VEX Robotics Competitions. In 2011, the team received the VEX Community Award for involvement with the Plum Point Middle School Robotics Team. In 2012, the team won the VEX Cooperate Award for its intra and inter team mentoring.

Student Government Association

The HHS SGA is a member of the Calvert Association of Student Councils, the Maryland Association of Student Councils, and the National Association of Student Councils. It has won the MASC Felix Simon Award for outstanding SGA's and has hosted two state conferences. Every year, HHS SGA hosts homecoming along with other events, and sends multiple kids to both state and national conferences.

Humane Society Club

The Humane Society Club is for students interested in the protection of animals.

KEY Club

Key Club (Kiwanis Educating Youth) is a club devoted to giving back to the community and informing others of what they do as a club and a whole. They participate in numerous fundraising and awareness activities, such as: The Eliminate Project, Trick or Treat in the Garden at Anne Marie Gardens, The End Hunger Food Drive in Calvert County, and much more. The Huntingtown High School Key Club, while attending their District Convention in 2015, received numerous awards. These awards include: Outstanding President to Sydney President, Outstanding Vice President to Christy Nguyen, the Dale Q. Larson Faculty Outstanding Faculty Advisor to Ms. Rachel Dove, an Above and Outstanding Member Award to Elisabeth Cunningham, and First Place in the Club Video Contest.
