IBM MobileFirst is a set of mobile solutions for businesses offered by the information technology company IBM. IBM MobileFirst was launched in 2013 as an umbrella brand for IBM’s mobile software, services and solutions.[1]

Overview

In 2013, IBM launched IBM MobileFirst, a mobile strategy that enables clients to streamline and accelerate mobile adoption. IBM MobileFirst combines IBM’s industry expertise with mobile, big data and analytics, cloud and social technologies to help organizations capture new markets and reach more people.[2] IBM has more than 4,300 patents in mobile, social and security, which have been incorporated into IBM MobileFirst solutions.[3] IBM MobileFirst has a set of mobile solutions in different industries such as Banking, Insurance, Retail, Transport, Telecom, Government, Healthcare and Automotive.[4]

Products that belong to the IBM MobileFirst portfolio:

  • IBM MobileFirst Platform, formerly named Worklight,[5] a mobile enterprise application platform that supports the development of HTML5, hybrid and native mobile applications. The MobileFirst Studio - the platform's IDE - allows mobile developers to make full use of all existing HTML5 functionality as well as further enhance these capabilities with utilities and mechanisms required by modern organizations such as encryption of locally stored data, offline authentication, combined HTML5 and native coding, 3rd-party library integration with frameworks such as PhoneGap, Sencha Touch, jQuery, and more.[6]
  • IBM MobileFirst Protect, formerly Maas 360, a product of Fiberlink that was purchased by IBM in 2013.[7]

Apple/IBM partnership

In July 2014, a deal was announced with Apple to transform enterprise mobility through a new class of industry-specific business apps for iPhone and iPad. As part of the agreement, IBM, under the brand IBM MobileFirst for iOS, will create exclusive industry applications for iOS and use its services to bring iPads and iPhones to enterprises and corporations.[10] Apple, on its end, will introduce a special AppleCare program that will provide 24/7 hardware support for devices for big businesses.[11] The partnership will offer Apple access to IBM’s customers and analytics capabilities to power enterprise apps for their devices.[12] On December 10, 2014, Apple and IBM, in a joint statement, introduced 10 mobile apps for business. On December 16, 2015, the two announced the availability of over 100 enterprise apps.[13] The apps will provide solutions in a number of different industries such as Banking, Retail, Insurance, Financial Services, Telecommunications and Government and have announced several clients such as Air Canada, Banorte, Citi and Sprint.[14]
