Events

  • Day of the Republic in the Republic of Macedonia, celebrated on 2 August each year. Ilinden, or the Day of St. Ilija, is a Macedonian national and Orthodox holiday. Ilinden has special significance for the history of the Macedonian people because in 1903, 2 August marks the start of the Ilinden rebellion against the Ottoman Empire. 2 August 1944 subsequently marked the first Assembly of the ASNOM (Anti-Fascist Assembly for the People's Liberation of Macedonia) and the foundation of the Macedonian state.
