Indian Institute of Technology Tirupati (IIT Tirupati) is an autonomous premier engineering and technology university located in Tirupati. It started functioning from August 5, 2015 in a temporary campus housed at Krishna Theja Educational Institutions in Chadalawada Nagar on the outskirts of the temple city.[1] For the academic year 2015-2016, it will offer B.Tech courses in 4 core branches namely Civil, Computer Science, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering with 30 seats in each branch.[2]

Till a Director is appointed by MHRD for IIT Tirupati, the Director of IIT Madras, Dr. Bhaskar Ramamurthi will be the Mentor Director. As part of the mentorship plan, IIT-M will depute a batch of experienced professors including the ones recently retired, former deans and heads of various departments to the new campuses as both permanent and visiting professors.[3]

Campus & Location

IIT-Tirupati would be initially functioning out of the campus of Chadalawada Group of Institutes in Tirupati, while the permanent building would be coming up near Yerpedu located between Renigunta and Srikalahasti. The hostel facility for boys has been arranged at 21st Century Gurukul, a few yards away from Alipiri, the foothills of Tirumala, whereas girls can avail the facility at the temporary campus itself. The land acquisition for permanent campus is already completed. More than a dozen Japanese industries and other prominent ones like Cadbury and Saint-Gobain are set up here. The Tirupati airport is also being converted into an International airport and all this activity is happening close to the upcoming campus.

Academics

IIT Tirupati offers a 4-year Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) programmes in several engineering fields. Admission to these programmes is through the Indian Institute of Technology Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE), and students are admitted after completing 10+2 schooling. The institute flagged its beginning with the following 4 departments.[4]
