International Disability Alliance
The International Disability Alliance (IDA) is an international alliance of individuals to defend the rights of those with disabilities at national, regional and international levels. IDA played an important role together with Inclusion International, a organisation for the rights of people with intellectual disabilities, Down Syndrome International (DSI), and World Federation of the Deaf to form the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities into its adoption by the United Nations General Assembly. Its mission is "To advance the human rights of persons with disabilities as a united voice of organizations of persons with disabilities utilizing the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and other human rights instruments."[1]
IDA is composed of international and regional Disabled Persons Organisations (DPOs).[2] The global member organizations are:
- Disabled Peoples´ International (DPI)
- Down Syndrome International (DSI)
- Inclusion International (II)
- International Federation of Hard of Hearing People (IFHOH)
- The World Blind Union (WBU)
- World Federation of the Deaf (WFD)
- World Federation of Deafblind (WFDB)
- The World Network of Users and Survivors of Psychiatry (WNUSP)
The regional member organisations are:
- Arab Organization of Disabled People (AODP)
- European Disability Forum (EDF)
- The Latin American Network of Non-Governmental Organizations of Persons with Disabilities and their Families (RIADIS)
- Pacific Disability Forum (PDF)
IDA works in affiliation with bodies of the United Nations in apprising DPOs on the status of the rights of people with disabilities according to most current observations and in accordance with treaty signatories.
