Is Genesis History? is a 2017 American Christian documentary film that promotes creation science. It was directed by Thomas Purifoy, Jr. and distributed by Compass Cinema and Fathom Events.

Synopsis

The goal of Is Genesis History? is to make "a positive case that the Bible is historically reliable" through looking at the differing views of and questions concerning the origin of Earth, the universe, and man.[3] Interviewing thirteen creation scientists, the narrator of the film argues that Genesis does portray real historical events.[4][5]

Cast

Del Tackett, the creator of Focus on the Family's The Truth Project, narrates the film.[4][6] The other cast members all have Ph.Ds in their respecive fields; they include:

The bonus features released with the film also include Stuart Burgess, Douglas Kelly, and Larry Vardiman.

Production

The director of Is Genesis History?, Thomas Purifoy Jr., was inspired to make the film after his daughter began asking him questions about the creation–evolution controversy after watching a debate between Bill Nye and Ken Ham on February 4, 2014.[7] Compass Cinema began principal photography in June 2015, filming Art Chadwick and the Dinosaur Excavation and Taphonomic Research Project in Wyoming.[8]

Release

Is Genesis History? was released into American theaters one night on February 23, 2017.[1] It was shown in 704 theaters and grossed $1,796,182 in one night.[1] Over 143,000 people saw the film that night,[9] and its box office earnings were the highest of any film in theaters in the United States that night.[9][10][11][12] Due to its commercial success, the film was shown again in theaters on March 2 and 7 in the United States,[9][11][12] as well as in Canada on March 14, 2017.[9][13] The film went on to earn an additional $900,000 during the encore showings, for an approximate box office total of $2,570,355 and 215,000 tickets sold.[2][14] The movie was the second highest-grossing event – and the highest grossing movie – organized by Fathom Events in 2017, and it was one out of only six Fathom Events to gross over $2 million that year.[15]

Reception

Is Genesis History? was endorsed by young Earth creationist organizations such as Answers in Genesis,[16] the Institute for Creation Research,[17] Creation Ministries International,[18] and the Associates for Biblical Research.[19] Jerry Newcombe of the politically conservative website WND also endorsed the film.[20] According to Jonathan Sarfati of Creation Ministries International: "After the spectacular footage and important scientific and exegetical information, the documentary closes with a very effective explanation about why Genesis matters for the Christian faith."[18]

WORLD magazine wrote a review of the film, calling it: "An engrossing primer on why we can feel confident believing the Bible’s account of creation. I just may need to watch it a few more times with the pause button and a notebook handy. Because for Christians educated within the prevailing evolutionary paradigm, Is Genesis History? provides a much-needed reminder just how young the theory of an old earth is."[21] Patheos columnists published positive,[22] negative,[23] and ambivalent[24] reviews about the film, as well as interviews with key cast members.[25]

Other organizations, such as The BioLogos Foundation,[26] Reasons To Believe,[27] and The Gospel Coalition,[28] which do not accept a young Earth, gave the film negative reviews. According to Gregg Davidson, Joel Duff, and Ken Wolgemuth of Biologos, despite the "excellent" cinematography of the film, "the narrative that accompanied the rich display of God’s amazing creation fell far short of reflecting what we actually find revealed in nature."[26]

Paul Nelson, who was interviewed for the film, later published an article stating that the film distorted his arguments and presented "a false dichotomy" between naturalistic evolution and young Earth creationism while omitting other viewpoints.[29] Director and Producer Thomas Purifoy wrote a response entitled A Tale of Two Dichotomies in which he presented the full film interview with Nelson as evidence and stated that "as a philosopher, Paul seemed to be shifting back to viewing things from a philosophical perspective. The film, however, was not about comparing two different philosophies, but two different histories."[30]
