Jelastic (acronym for Java Elastic) is an unlimited PaaS and Container based IaaS within a single platform that provides high availability of applications, automatic vertical and horizontal scaling via containerization to software development clients, enterprise businesses, DevOps, System Admins, Developers, OEMs and web hosting providers.[1][2] The company has developed technologies for moving Java, Node.js, Ruby, Python, .NET/Windows and PHP-based applications onto the cloud,[1][2][3][4] solving the task of application delivery and simultaneously providing orchestration of multi-container environments in public, hybrid and private clouds. Originally based in Ukraine, the company’s headquarters are now in Palo Alto, California.[5] The startup claims to currently be partnering with 21 web hosting providers “from more countries than any other cloud platform in the market.” [6]

History

In 2010, Ruslan Synytskyy, Constantin Alexandrov, and Alexey Skutin founded Hivext Technologies (parent company of Jelastic).[7] The three were working together on a project remotely, but found they were spending large amounts of time on hosting and system administrative tasks.[7] In late 2010, they began working full-time developing tools for simplifying and automating application deployment and hosting.[7]

In 2011, Jelastic launched as a PaaS provider for Java applications.[8] In 2013, the company added PHP cloud hosting to their service options.[8] Jelastic has data centers and hosting partners worldwide.[4]

Jelastic's main headquarters are located in Palo Alto, California.

The definition of Platform-as-Infrastructure is a product that delivers all of the ease-of-use of PaaS with the configurability and flexibility of IaaS.[9]

In March 2013, Jelastic updated its pricing model to make scalability affordable.[10] Customers get automatic discounts for buying larger blocks of resources and pay only for what they use. Jelastic offers a cloud-based solutions that accommodate requirements and have the ability to scale on demand.[10] In March 2013, in response to customer requests, Jelastic announced support for the Apache TomEE server stack.[11]

In September 2013 Jelastic appointed John E. Derrick as their CEO and Founder Ruslan Synytskyy as the company's CTO.[12]

In November 2013 Jelastic released the industry's first Platform-as-Infrastructure Solution for Private, Public and Hybrid Clouds [13]

In April 2014 Jelastic released support for OpenShift cartridges. Jelastic released a list of supported cartridges, but also the option for users to build their own [14]

In October 2014 Co-founder Ruslan Synytsky resumed the position as the CEO of Jelastic.

In March 2015 Jelastic released support for production ready Docker Containers and .NET/Windows on top of Parallels Containers virtualization for Windows applications support.

In June 2015 Jelastic released version 3.3, code name "Trinity" to represent the union of three cloud options (Hybrid, Public and Private), with multi-region support within different data centers and clouds.[15]

In July 2015 Jelastic launched a new Premium Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) product designed for medium and large-sized hosting service providers, telcos, systems integrators and Internet service providers.[16]

In October 2015 Jelastic released the 4.0 version named Joker (Jelastic + Docker), to represent the company’s latest innovations in Docker technology.[17]

In November 2015 Jelastic launched a partner catalog with about forty hosting providers that are offering Jelastic Public PaaS and Virtual Private Cloud for DevOps to their end-customers around the world.[18]

In January 2016 Jelastic announced the release of 4.3 version named Jelastic Bond with native PHP 7 support [19]

Funding

In 2010, Runa Capital provided $500,000 in seed funding to Jelastic. Jelastic then closed a Series A funding round in 2012 of $2 Million from Almaz Capital Partners and Foresight Ventures. Later that year in July, Jelastic received a $1 Million grant from the Skolkovo Foundation for the development of its private cloud offering.[20] As part of the grant, Jelastic set up an office in the Skolkovo Innovation Center in Moscow, also known as the Russian Silicon Valley.[20]

In September 2013, Jelastic announced additional funding had been acquired from Maxfield Capital, a venture capital company focused on early stage and seed investments.[21]

Services

Jelastic is a Platform-as-Infrastructure provider of Java and PHP hosting.[8] It has international hosting partners and data centers.[4] The company can add memory, CPU and disk space to meet customer needs.[10] The main competitors of Jelastic are Google App Engine, Amazon Elastic Beanstalk, Heroku, and Cloud Foundry.[22] Jelastic is unique in that it does not have limitations or code change requirements, and it offers automated vertical scaling, application lifecycle management, and availability from multiple hosting providers around the world.[23]

In May 2013, Jelastic announced a new plugin for integration with NetBeans IDE.[24] Two weeks later, they launched Jelastic PaaS 1.9.1, which included the latest versions of the software stacks (including PostgreSQL 9.2.4).[25]

Other supported plugins are IntelliJ IDEA[26] and Eclipse.[27]

August 14, 2013, Jelastic version 1.9.2 was released and included FTP and FTPS access to database servers, the ability to deploy PHP projects from GIT repository with submodules/dependencies added and PHP version 5.5.[28]

September 30, 2013, the Jelastic Mobile App was released and included functions such as viewing and monitoring environments and viewing current status and resource consumption in Jelastic.[29]

November 2013 Jelastic announced a partnership with Redhat on Openshift to drive standardization of PaaS cartridges[30]

April 2014 was first Paas provider to add OpenShift Cartridge support[31]

June 2014 added Ruby (programming language) support[32]

July 2014 opened Marketplace with one-click installations of popular apps[33]

September 2014 added Node.js support[34]

October 2014 released version 2.5 with multi nodes scaling on all middleware layers, automatic horizontal scaling of app servers, and a complete redesign of the Marketplace[35]

December 2014 announced Docker integration[36]

In March 2015 Jelastic released support for production ready Docker Containers and .NET/Windows on top of Parallels Containers virtualization for Windows applications support [37]

Advisers

Advisers to the Jelastic team include the creator of PHP Rasmus Lerdorf,[44] the father of Java James Gosling and Brazilian JavaMan Bruno Souza (programmer),[45] Serguei Beloussov, the founder of Parallels, Inc., Soeren von Varchmin and Mark Zbikowski who spearheaded efforts in MS-DOS and contributed to OS/2, Windows NT and Cairo.[46]

Other partners include Michael "Monty" Widenius, the founder of MySQL and MariaDB, the founder of NGINX, Igor Sysoev; and David Blevins, the founder of Apache TomEE, OpenEJB and Geronimo Projects.[46]

Awards and recognition

After its launch, technology news site Informilo named Jelastic on its list of the Top 25 Hottest Russian Startups. To identify these companies Informilo asked investors in Moscow, London, New York, Boston and Silicon Valley to nominate and vote on companies outside of their own portfolios.[5]

Jelastic won a Duke’s Choice Award, which celebrates extreme innovation in the world of Java technology. Jelastic won the highest prize from Oracle - The Technology Leader Award.[3]

Venture Village named Jelastic as one of the Top 10 Russian Internet Startups in March 2012.[47]

In December 2012, The Moscow Times named Jelastic one of the Top 10 Russian Internet Companies.Jelastic has won several industry awards, such as the Duke’s Choice Award, among others.[48]

November 2013 Jelastic was named as a finalist in the UP-START Cloud Awards.[49]
