Joan Mary Gale Robinson, née Thomas (1910–1988), was a British author and illustrator of children's books. She published her first book for children in 1939 and followed on with a set of young adult novels, starting with When Marnie Was There, published in 1967 and shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal that year.[5] Hayao Miyazaki selected Marnie as one of his fifty recommended children's books,[6] and Studio Ghibli adapted it into the film of the same name.

She married writer and illustrator Richad Gavin Robinson in 1941, and they lived in King's Lynn, Norfolk.[7]
