JoAnna Falco-Leshin is a professor of English and Humanities at Miami Dade College. She has dedicated her life to her profession and has been a valuable faculty member of Miami Dade College for over 20 years. Dr. JoAnna Falco-Leshin is a published author of various books, and the leading faculty advisor to SOBEIT Mag.[1] She completed research for her dissertation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and received her PhD from the University of Miami.

Career background

JoAnna Falco-Leshin, Ed,D. professor,[2] author, and consultant completed her doctorate in Higher Education Administration at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida. Her dissertation entitled, The University’s Role in Scientific Decision Making, The RDNA Controversy, was a seminal yet important work exploring the role of corporatism on the growth of the fledging science of genetic engineering. Cited as part of the publications at the Institute Archives of MIT, it is frequently used for reference. Working as a consultant in Washington, she left to join the Archdiocese of Miami as both instructor and literary arts coordinator. She has been a recipient of NISOD Award for Teaching Excellence, the Blockbuster Entertainment Corporation Endowed Teaching Chair; and recently, she was nominated to Who’s Who of American Teachers, a recognition she received from her students. One of her most recent works, The Buddha The Body and the Reason Why?: Why Meditate? she co-authored with her husband Robert Leshin, Professor Emeritus at Miami Dade College.

Dr. Falco-Leshin's most recent work includes the online publication of SOBEIT Magazine,[3] a collection of Miami Dade College students' creative writing works. With the publication of SOBEIT, Dr. Falco-Leshin accomplished "a ‘meditation on language’ that would allow students to depict the ‘hell-bent’ and the heroic of human nature."[4]

Leadership

Dr. Falco-Leshin served as the Wolfson Campus Faculty Senate President for 7 consecutive years . During her tenure in office she served under the leadership of Dr. Eduardo J. Padrón, then Campus President. She was elected as Vice President of the Miami Dade Community College's Faculty Senate Consortium. As interim President of the College's Senate's Consortium, she presided over the critical vote endorsing the faculty's collective bargaining efforts. Dr. Falco-Leshin was the first the Vice President of the United Faculty of Miami Dade College Wolfson Campus. A member of NCTE and the AAUP, she is a strong proponent of academic freedom.

Awards

Dr. JoAnna Falco-Leshin is the recipient of the NISOD Award for Teaching Excellence.[5] She is also the first recipient of the Blockbuster Entertainment Corporation's Endowed Teaching Chair.
