Johann Ranftl (historian)

Johann Ranftl (25 December 1865 – 7 March 1937) was an Austrian Roman Catholic priest and teacher, as well as a historian of art and literature.

Biography

Johann Ranftl was born in Wundschuh-Gradenfeld, the son of a master blacksmith. He studied Catholic theology at the University of Graz from 1885 to 1889. In 1888 he was ordained a priest in the Diocese of Seckau and subsequently served as chaplain in the parish church of St. Andrä im Sausal, in Köflach and in Oberzeiring. In 1891 he became prefect of the Graz boys' seminary. From 1891 to 1895 he studied Germanistics, classical philology and art history at the University of Graz and received his doctorate in 1896. In 1897 he passed the teacher's examination and from 1898 taught at the minor seminary in Graz. In 1919 he habilitated in Christian archaeology and art history at the theological faculty of the University of Graz and became associate professor in 1925. In 1927 he was awarded an honorary doctorate in theology by the University of Graz.

Ranftl belonged to the Roman artists' guild and was chairman of the Christian Art Association of the Diocese of Seckau as well as conservator of the Imperial and Royal Central Commission for the Preservation of Monuments around Graz. In addition to his teaching activities, he wrote scientific studies on art history and essays on literary studies, as well as theater and book reviews.[1] In Graz, he lived in Grabenstraße. He was buried in the St. Leonhard cemetery in Graz.
