John Dizikes

John Dizikes Ph.D. (born 1932) is a Professor Emeritus of American Studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz, who served as Cowell College provost and who is a recipient of the UCSC Alumni Association's Distinguished Teaching Award.[1]

Dizikes is the author of numerous articles and four books, and won the 1993 National Book Critics Circle Award for "Opera in America: A Cultural History."[2] He also has an interest in thoroughbred horse racing, and in 2000 wrote a biography of Hall of Fame jockey Tod Sloan.[3]

An award bearing his name is presented each year to deserving faculty in the UCSC humanities department.
