John Tyler High School is a public, co-educational secondary school in Tyler, Texas. It is part of the Tyler Independent School District and serves 9th through 12th grade. The school is named after John Tyler, the tenth President of the United States.

About John Tyler High

John Tyler High School, a part of Tyler Independent School District, is located in the northwest section of Tyler, Texas. As of the 2010-2011 academic year, the school boasted an enrollment of approximately 2,047 students. John Tyler offers academic avenues through the AP program, UIL competitions, and the College and Career Center. John Tyler also carries a long history of athletic excellence in sports such as football, basketball, volleyball, and soccer.

John Tyler High School shares a long-standing crosstown rivalry in sports with Robert E. Lee High School, located in south Tyler. However in recent years, redistricting measures and changes to John Tyler's UIL classification have caused this rivalry to wane some, as the two schools face scheduling issues with one another. Until recently, both schools were classified as 5A-schools in UIL competition, but declining enrollment at John Tyler has resulted in the school being downgraded to 4A status. The annual football game between the two schools, traditionally played as the last game of the season for both teams, must now be scheduled for earlier in the season in order to comply with UIL bylaws regarding cross-divisional competition.

  • 46.2% Hispanic

  • 0.1% American Indian

Athletics

John Tyler High is known for its elite football program. The J.T. Lions have won two state championships: 1973 under coach Corky Nelson, and in 1994 under coach Allen Wilson. In addition, Tyler High School's (Tyler High went on to be renamed John Tyler High) state championship in 1930 under coach George Foltz is credited to John Tyler.

The 1994 championship season featured one of the wildest games in Texas high school football history. In the regional final against Plano East (played at Texas Stadium), John Tyler had a 41–17 lead with 2:42 remaining. Plano East would score a touchdown, then recover three consecutive onside kicks and score touchdowns on each of them to take a 44–41 lead with 24 seconds remaining. However, on the ensuing kickoff, John Tyler returner Roderick Dunn ran for a touchdown to win the game 48–44.[1] The game won the 1995 Showstopper of the Year ESPY Award.
