Josh Hannay (born 11 January 1980 in Moranbah, Queensland) is an Australian professional rugby league footballer of the 1990s and 2000s. A Queensland State of Origin representative goal-kicking centre three-quarter back, he set the record for most points scored for the North Queensland Cowboys of the National Rugby League (NRL). Hannay also played for NRL club the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks and also in Super League for Welsh club Crusaders.

Playing career

Hannay was named to make his debut at the age of 16 during the 1996 season; however, his selection was vetoed by the Australian Rugby League, as he was not 16 years of age at the beginning of the year. In 1998 he made his first grade debut for the Cowboys. From 1998 to 2006 he was a regular first grade centre for the Cowboys and becoming the club's greatest point-scorer. Hannay first played State of Origin football for Queensland in the 2003 State of Origin series. He kicked 2 goals from 3 attempts in the Cowboys loss to the Wests Tigers in the 2005 NRL Grand Final. He was also named in the centres for the Maroons in game 3 of the 2006 State of Origin series.

Hannay signed to play for the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks in 2007 until the end of 2008. In 2007, after struggling for form in top grade and Premier League both he and fellow Sharks recruit Brett Seymour were told they were not wanted in Premier League. Hannay then played his trade for the Gymea Gorillas before signing with the Crusaders.[1]

Josh Hannay was used mainly as a centre and goal-kicker for the Celtic Crusaders. In August 2009, Hannay, along with five team mates, were ordered to leave the United Kingdom after the UK Border Agency identified breaches to their visa conditions. Celtic Crusaders cancelled Hannay's contract with immediate effect.[2]

In 2010 and 2011 Josh Hannay played for the Mackay Cutters in the Queensland Cup competition.
