Krishna Chandra Pant was an Indian politician and cabinet minister in the federal Government of India holding the portfolios as Minister of Defence, Finance, Steel and Heavy Engineering, Home Affairs, Electronics, Atomic Energy and Science and Technology. He was the first chairman of the Advisory Board on Energy. He was also deputy chairman of the Planning Commission of India, the pivotal economic planning body of the Republic of India from 2 February 1999 to 17 June 2004 during the premiership of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Mr. Pant is the son of legendary Indian freedom fighter Shri Govind Ballabh Pant, who along with Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru was a key figure in the fight for Independence from the British crown.

Early life
Pant was born in Bhowali, Nainital District of Uttarakhand State. He was the son of Govind Ballabh Pant, the first Premier of United Provinces and after Independence the first Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. He was educated at St. Joseph's College, Nainital.[2] He did his post graduation with science subjects from Lucknow University and won the Chancellor's Gold Medal.
Personal life
He was married to Ila Pant. Later, she was also elected to the Lok Sabha from Bharatiya Janata Party. They have two sons Sunil Pant and Ranjan Pant.
Politics
He was elected to the Lok Sabha for the first time in 1962, and then in 1967, 1971 and 1989. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1978 and was leader of the house during 1979-1980.[3] Pant left the Indian National Congress party in 1998[4] and later on joined the Bharatiya Janata Party.
Negotiation skill
Pant was known for his negotiating skills,[5] late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi chose him as the chief negotiator to work out a deal with the protagonists of the separate Telangana movement in the 1970s, as Minister of State for Home Affairs he was successful in evolving an agreement that led to 'Mulki Rules' and made the interlocutor on Kashmir by the then Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee during the NDA term in 2003.
Union Minister
Pant was Union minister with cabinet rank holding the portfolios of Defence, Finance, Steel and Heavy Engineering, Home Affairs, Electronics, Atomic Energy and Science and Technology. He was the first chairman of the Advisory Board on Energy. He was deputy chairman of the Planning Commission of India from 2 February 1999 to 17 June 2004 during the premiership of Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Death
Krishna Chandra Pant died on 15 November 2012 following a heart attack at the age of 81.[6][7]
