K. Sachidanandan (Malayalam: കെ സച്ചിദാനന്ദൻ) is an Indian poet [1]and critic writing in Malayalam and English. A pioneer of modern poetry in Malayalam, a bilingual literary critic, playwright, editor, columnist and translator, he is the former Editor of Indian Literature journal and the former Secretary of Sahitya Akademi.He is also a public intellectual of repute upholding secular anti-caste views, supporting causes like environment, human rights and free software and a well known speaker on issues concerning contemporary Indian literature.[2][3]

Life and career

Koyamparambath Satchidanandan was born in May 28, 1946 in Pulloot, a village in Kodungallur in the Thrissur District of Kerala. After his early education in the village school, he studied biology at Christ College, Irinjalakuda and after getting a post-graduate degree in English literature, he became a lecturer of English in Christ College Irinjalakuda ,Kerala state.[4]

He has been a proponent of the school of New Poetry, and shown interest in issues of social justice. In addition to propagating new theories, he has "associated himself with a movement with extremist leanings."[4]

Of the many critical essays he has writing, some of the more noteworthy titles are 'Kurukshetram', 'Marxian saundaryashastram' and 'Nerudaoru pathanam'.[4]

He has also translated many international poems into Indian languages, including the poems of Brecht, Neruda, Mao and Nazrul Islam.[4]

British betting and gaming company Ladbrokes had issued a betting list giving him an outside chance as a Nobel probable in 2011.[5]

In 2015, he was the judge for 'The Open Road Review Poetry Prize' for the literary magazine, Open Road Review [6]

Satchidanandan is married, with two daughters.[7][8]

Resigned from Sahitya Akademi

On October 10, 2015 Koyamparambath Sachidanandan resigned from all his positions at the Sahitya Akademi to protest its failure to condemn the killing of M. M. Kaburgi and other writers and thinkers. Further stating in his resignation that Sahitya Akademi "has failed in its duty to stand with the writers and to uphold the freedom of expression guaranteed by the Constitution of India that seems to be getting violated every day in the country.[9] [10]
