Biography
Early life
Katie Herzig was born in California to a musical family. When she was a year old her family moved to Fort Collins, Colorado where she attended Rocky Mountain High School.[1] In her senior year of high school, Herzig received an acoustic guitar from her father which prompted her to begin playing the instrument. She attended the University of Colorado at Boulder where she majored in journalism with emphasis in broadcast production.[2] In 2000, she graduated with a bachelor's degree in journalism.[3]
Early career
While attending the University of Colorado, Herzig formed the band Newcomers Home with Tim and Laurie Thornton and Andrew Jed in the summer of 1997.[4] Newcomers Home's music was primarily influenced by bluegrass and folk music; however, over time, the band's work became more influenced by pop music. Although initially Herzig suffered from stage fright and confined herself to singing backing vocals and playing the drums for the band, she eventually began to play the guitar and became a lead singer. The band broke up in 2006, leaving Herzig free to fully pursue her solo career.[2]
Solo career
In 2004, Herzig released her first solo album, Watch Them Fall. The title track was featured on the WB television show Smallville. Another song, "Say Goodbye" appeared in the 2007 film, X's & O's.[5] In 2006, she released a second solo album, Weightless which she recorded using Pro Tools and instruments that she borrowed from friends.[6] She co-wrote one track from the album with Kim Richey, "Jack and Jill".[7] It was also featured on an episode of One Tree Hill and Pretty Little Liars. Two tracks from the album "Fool's Gold" and "Sweeter than This" were featured on Grey's Anatomy. Her song "Where the Road Meets the Sun" was featured on the Season 5 finale of Grey's Anatomy. The song "Wish You Well" was featured in the sixth season of Grey's Anatomy and in the first season of Pretty Little Liars. "Lost & Found" was featured in the third episode of the eighth season of Grey's Anatomy as well as on the third season finale of Cougar Town. "Closest I Get" was also featured on a 2012 episode of Grey's Anatomy.
After the release of Weightless, Herzig moved to Nashville, Tennessee to further pursue her solo career. She then toured with the Fray and as a member of the Paste Songwriters Tour.
On May 18, 2008 Herzig released a new album Apple Tree, which is so named because the title is mentioned in three different songs on the album.[2] She has since appeared on the KCRW radio program, Morning Becomes Eclectic and joined American Songwriter magazine's Ten Out of Tenn tour.[8] On September 18, the song "I Hurt Too" from Apple Tree was featured on the police procedural television drama Bones. "How the West Was Won", also from Apple Tree, plays over the closing credits of HBO's Bored to Death episode, "The Case of the Grievous Clerical Error!". She also appeared in the 2008 independent documentary film, A Nashville State of Mind.[9] 'Forevermore' is featured on Australian TV in supermarket store Target's 2010 ad campaign. Herzig's 2009 single "Hey Na Na" was used on the pilot episode of the Lifetime series: Drop Dead Diva. It was also used in "Going the Distance" starring Drew Barrymore and Justin Long, and the Dove Chocolate Bar commercial, More to Love. Her song "Lost and Found" featured in a Carnival Cruise Lines commercial, Thats Right Carnival Cruise Lines.
In September 2012, she was featured in a campaign called "30 Songs / 30 Days" to support Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, a multi-platform media project inspired by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn’s book.[10]
In July 2013, her song, 'Lost and Found' from "The Waking Sleep", was used in the first trailer for Disney's "Saving Mr. Banks". Her song 'Lost and Found' also featured extensively in the 2013 film "Family Weekend".
In October 2015, her song "Say It Out Loud" was included in “My Feet Keep Moving Still: Songs to Benefit Steps of Faith Foundation”, which is an album that benefits Steps of Faith, a group that assists amputees.[11]
Awards
Herzig co-wrote the song "Heaven's My Home" with Ruby Amanfu which was performed by the Duhks and nominated for a 2007 Grammy award for Best Country Performance.[12] The song, performed by Sam & Ruby, also appeared in the 2008 film The Secret Life of Bees. Herzig was a finalist at the 2004 Planet Bluegrass Folk Festival songwriting competition.[13]
